Clue had a very important appointment with Dr. Judith Shoemaker of Always Helpful Veterinary Services in Nottingham, Pennsylvania on March twenty-eighth. Dr. Shoemaker (www.judithshoemaker.com) is an amazing, intelligent woman with cat-like reflexes and a sharp wit. Her web site states, “Dr. Shoemaker’s equine and companion animal veterinary practice focuses on complementary medicine and holistic therapy — integrating chiropractic, acupuncture, and other alternative modalities. The practice’s equine patients include Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses, pleasure horses, draft and gaited horses, top-level competition horses in dressage, open jumping, endurance, western sports, and combined training. Over the last ten years, Dr. Shoemaker has been affiliated with premiere equine sports therapy centers, providing comprehensive maintenance, therapeutic management, and consultation to equine competitors in the US and internationally.” I learned much from the experience, and I appreciate Dr. Shoemaker allowing me to use the video footage from Clue’s appointment.
Clue, as stated in the video, will hopefully be returning to New Jersey this summer. She will be taking long-lining lessons while still at Daisy Haven Farm, and will continue easing into work upon her return to NJ. Dr. Shoemaker was very encouraging, and she believes Clue will have a great career as a jumper. She also pointed out that Clue’s parrot mouth (which isn’t so extreme that it can’t be corrected with proper shaping of the teeth) probably “resulted in a high head set when she used to be ridden, right?” Keep in mind, Dr. Shoemaker NEVER saw any of my videos! I was pretty blown away by all of her observations. She feels that Clue will emerge from this experience more correct and more capable of effectively using herself–in other words, she will be BETTER under saddle than before she was injured! It’s hard to believe, but I continue to remain positive and hopeful.
